Google is one of the most popular tech companies in the world. The search giant is well known for acquiring products with great potential. It has already acquired some of the most popular products like YouTube, Nest and many more in the past. And according to recent reports from Russian media, the company is also looking to acquire Telegram, one of the most popular messaging apps. The reports claim that Google is planning to pay around $1 billion to acquire Telegram.

According to the reports, a year ago when Sundar Pichai (now Google CEO) was heading up Google product, he met with Telegram founder Pavel Durov and offered him to buy his company. But Durov reportedly rejected the offer. However Durov today confirmed that these reports are false and there is no acquisition talk going in between Telegram and Google.

“This is complete bullshit. There were no acquisition talks, no plans for any such thing either.” confirmed a Telegram spokesperson to TNW.

We weren’t that surprised when we first heard about these reports. As according to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, Google is currently working on a new smart mobile messaging client, based on its smart AI and chatbot technology. While we don’t know anything about this messaging client yet, but it would reportedly replace Google’s current messaging app - Hangouts.

Telegram currently has around 100 million monthly users. While the company has introduced number of features on its platform, including ‘bots,’ but it is still searching for ways to monetize its network. Google’s messaging platform, Hangouts, on the other hand is founding it difficult to survive. Its user base is already lower than what Facebook-owned WhatsApp is receiving. The messaging giant, which was purchased by Facebook for $19 billion in 2014, just crossed its one billion mark. While a billion active users mark is still far for Telegram, but seeing its age, it would be not wrong to say that it has a great potential.

Facebook currently owns the maximum part of the messaging industry, thanks to WhatsApp and Messenger. So, if Google needs to win it back then it needs something very strong to overtake WhatsApp, which is also the top competitor for Telegram.
