Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio has partnered with Elon Musk’s Starlink to bring satellite-based internet to India. This partnership aims to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that even the most remote areas of India get high-speed internet access.
What Does This Jio-Starlink Partnership Mean?
India has made great progress in expanding internet access, but millions still struggle with poor or no connectivity, especially in rural areas. This is where satellite-based internet like Starlink comes in.
Unlike fiber-optic cables that require extensive groundwork, Starlink uses low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites to beam the internet directly to user terminals. This means faster deployment and connectivity in the most challenging places—from mountains to remote villages.
With Jio handling distribution and Starlink providing the technology, this partnership is set to make satellite internet popular in India. This will help making fast internet available in all over India, including in villages, hills, and remote islands.
Challenges and Regulatory Hurdles
While the partnership sounds promising, there are regulatory approvals required before Starlink can officially operate in India. The government has strict policies on satellite spectrum allocation, data security regulations and licensing for foreign satellite operators. But Jio’s partnership could help smoothen the approval process, given its strong market presence and experience in dealing with Indian telecom regulations.
When Will Starlink Internet Be Available in India?
Currently, Starlink is awaiting final approvals. Once cleared, Jio will distribute Starlink equipment through its retail network and online platforms.
Pricing and plans are yet to be announced, but expect competitive rates given Jio’s history of making internet affordable in India.
Before Jio, Starlink has also partnered with Airtel to offer Starlink equipments in India.
